West Indies and St Kitts & Nevis Patriots pacer Sheldon Cottrell helped his team in winning the CPL 2021 encounter on Thursday (September 2) against Barbados Royals with an exhilarating six off the last ball.

Cottrell smashed a magnificent maximum down the ground to take the Patriots past the finish line when all hopes seemed lost.

With Patriots requiring four runs off the last delivery against Royals’ off-spinner Ashley Nurse, the right-hander batting No.9 got underneath a full-pitched delivery and thumped a stroke to perfection over the long-off region.

Sheldon Cottrell hit Ashley Nurse for a maximum to seal victory for his team.

Cottrell finished with a memorable cameo, hitting 20 unbeaten runs off 7 balls when his team desperately needed it. His short but significant innings included two timely sixes after walking into bat with Patriots 127/7, needing 34 more runs to win off the 15 deliveries remaining.

The moment the last-ball six was connected, the Patriots players sitting on the sidelines sprinted upto Sheldon Cottrell and they all started celebrating the unexpected triumph.

Not the first time Sheldon Cottrell wins it with a six

The CPL 2021 game in St Kitts was not the first time that Sheldon Cottrell has won his team the contest with an exciting maximum. The pacer, who is widely known for his soldier-like walk and salute celebration after every wicket, has previously helped West Indies clinch a victory in the same fashion.

Facing Ireland in an ODI played in January 2020, Cottrell hit visitors’ right-arm pacer Mark Adair in Barbados for a six over cover region when the game was slipping away from West Indies’ grasp.

With West Indies nine down and requiring another 2 runs off the last two balls, the 32-year-old cricketer timed Adair’s slower ball comfortably over the boundary ropes.

There was a chance Cottrell may not have even survived till this penultimate ball of the over had Ireland not erred in their attempted run-out of his.

He misjudged a two batting alongside No.11 Hayden Walsh and almost got himself run-out. But an ill-directed throw from the deep and a fumble from Adair allowed him to recover his ground and he got back to the mark.
