Shubhda Bhosle Gaikwad: Meet India’s youngest woman umpire

The ongoing Legends League Cricket (LLC) has mostly hogged the limelight due to the presence of legendary former cricketers from all around the world. But amidst the competition between bat and ball, one name that has grabbed the headlines is that of Shubhda Bhosle Gaikwad.

Four women umpires are officiating in the three-team tournament in Oman and Gaikwad is one of them. The other three are Pakistan’s Humair Farah, Hong Kong’s Renee Montgomery and South Africa’s Lauren Agenbag.

Among the four umpires, Gaikwad is the youngest. Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav have lauded Gaikwad her incredible achievement.

Shubhda Bhosle Gaikwad belonging to cricket background

Hailing from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Gaikwad played for her state U16 and U19 teams until 2009. She belongs to a family of cricketers where her father is a former Ranji Trophy cricketer while her brother plies her trade for Vidarbha in domestic cricket.

Gaikwad has a PhD in Sport Psychology and a degree in Physical Education as well. She also completed Level O umpiring exam with support from her husband and family.

Back in 2012, Gaikwad officiated in her first match during the J.S. Anand Trophy, a tournament which is a part of the Women’s Senior Division Cricket in Bhopal. Gaikwad joined the ongoing event in Oman four months after she embraced motherhood.

Asia Lions, led by Misbah-ul-Haq, are sitting pretty on top of the table in the Legends League Cricket with four points from three games courtesy of two wins. Their net run rate of 0.581 is also the best among the participating teams in the championship.

The other two others in the league are India Maharajas, led by Mohammad Kaif, and World Giants, captained by Kevin Pietersen. Two matches remain in the league stage before the final takes place on Saturday, January 29 at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground (Ministry Turf 1), Al Amerat.
