Sri Lanka have been hit by a storm of injuries in their ongoing Boxing Day Test match against South Africa. Dhananjaya De Silva suffered a grade two tear on thigh on Day 1, which has ruled him out of the Test series.
Kasun Rajitha walked off the field after bowling just 2.1 overs against South Africa in the first innings and did not play a part in the match ever since. To make matters worse, Sri Lanka were hit by three more injuries on Day three, however only one of them was serious enough to rule the player out of the series.
Lahiru Kumara, aborted his 22nd over and walked back to the pavilion, complaining of a groin injury which is likely to keep him out of the remainder of the first Test. Wanindu Hasaranga, was another casualty as he suffered a minor left leg injury after he tried to save a boundary in the afternoon session of Day Three.
In response to Sri Lanka’s total of 395 runs in the first innings, the Proteas scored 621 runs and attained a first innings lead of 225 runs. Faf du Plessis was the top performer, scoring 199 runs. Sri Lanka ended the day with 65 runs for the loss of two wickets in their second innings, still trailing by 160 runs.
Just as Kusal Perera and Dinesh Chandimal were batting well towards the end of the day, Chandimal appeared to pull up lame while completing a single off the last ball of the day. Whether he will be able to bat on Day Four, still remains uncertain.
