Nothing could prevent Mumbai Indians from being IPL 2020 winners. After finishing the group stage with the highest ever net-run-rate by a team in the group stage, the Mumbai Indians won their two play-off matches comfortably.
Right from the first ball when Trent Boult dismissed Marcus Stoinis, MI had a firm grip on the finals. After losing two more wickets in quick succession, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant put on a 96-run stand with each of them scoring fifties.
This led Delhi Capitals score 156, which was never enough against the powerful team in Mumbai Indians. Starting with three consecutive forty-plus partnerships, they never looked worried in the chase as the required rate was kept in check.
Rohit Sharma with scores of 0, 4, 9, 35, 5, 35, 6 in his previous matches – scored a match-winning fifty. This was one of the rarest weaknesses in a team like Mumbai Indians, and Rohit managed to tick the box here. Here’s the stats from the mega event:-
2 – Rohit Sharma becomes only the second player to feature in 200 IPL matches after MS Dhoni. He capped it off in grand style by top-scoring for his team and winning the title. Rohit is the first player whose 200th match resulted in a win.
1 – Trent Boult became the first bowler to take a wicket off the first ball of an IPL final, while dismissing Marcus Stoinis. Though the experiment to open Stoinis worked well against SRH, it failed miserably against Mumbai Indians, who went on to be IPL 2020 winners.
1 – Rohit Sharma became the first ever captain with multiple fifty-plus scores in IPL finals. Also becomes the first to do it in multiple chases. He also scored 50 in just 26 balls during the 2015 IPL.
25 – Total wickets taken by Trent Boult in this year’s IPL, to go along with Jasprit Bumrah’s 27. This is the first ever IPL season with two bowlers from the same team taking 25 or more wickets. Adding to it 29 wickets were taken by Kagiso Rabada, making it the first season where three or more bowlers took 25+ wickets.
5 – DC skipper Shreyas Iyer produced only the fifth instance of a Delhi Capitals player finishing with 500+ runs in an IPL season.
