IPL 2020: Stats from RCB vs CSK & RR vs MI: Ruturaj Gaikwad’s maiden fifty, Ben Stokes’ second hundred and more

IPL 2020: Stats from RCB vs CSK & RR vs MI

Three of the four matches in the weekend double-header have seen a top-3 team losing to a lower placed team. Both the afternoon and the night matches have seen the chasing team won by eight wickets with more than an over to spare. The first match – RCB vs CSK – was about a team aiming for a top-2 spot and a team playing against the team hoping for miracles to qualify for the playoffs.

Yet CSK at the bottom of the points table, secured a clinical win chasing the target of 145 with 8 wickets to spare. It was a rare instance of a young player leading the front – as Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 65*(51) to guide the chase, without any frustrations.

However the other match of the double header ruled out CSK’s small hopes of qualifying after the win. The other match started with Jofra Archer making Quinton de Kock to fail after a long time. Mumbai Indians were 101/4 at 13 overs without any significant contributions. But it is then where their depth in batting came into prominence, as Hardik Pandya unleashed 60*(21) with good support from Saurabh Tiwary who scored 34(25).

As Mumbai Indians set a target of 196, the returning James Pattinson dismisses Robin Uthappa and Steve Smith in no time. But Ben Stokes lately known as someone who can do anything, scored a sublime hundred as Mumbai Indians lose their first match before the Super Over since their opener against CSK. This was a refreshing break from a low scoring trend in last few matches. Here’s a look at the stats from both the matches.

Stats from RCB-CSK match

2 – Total boundaries scored by Virat Kohli when he scored exactly fifty runs, with just one four and one six. This is the lowest boundaries of any player with a fifty-plus score in IPL. Dwayne Bravo hit 3 boundaries during his fifty against RCB at Johannesburg in 2009.

116.27 – Strike rate of Virat Kohli in the innings, which is the second lowest in his IPL career when making 50+. The only time he had a lower strike-rate was when he scored 55(48), at a strike-rate of 114.58 against Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017. RCB lost both the matches by a comfortable margin.

5 – Kohli might have hit just one six, but that made him become the fifth player to reach 200 IPL sixes. The others who reached it before him are Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.

3 – Ruturaj Gaikwad became only the third uncapped player with a fifty-plus score for Chennai Super Kings. The others are Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan in 2008 and Srikkanth Aniruddha in 2011. None of them are yet to play international cricket.

2018 – Chennai Super Kings usually start with overseas openers. Before Gaikwad, the last Indian opener with a fifty-plus score for Chennai Super Kings was Ambati Rayudu in 2018. Before Rayudu could do it, the last Indian opener was Murali Vijay in 2013.

9.12 – Mohammed Siraj’s IPL economy rate, which is now the highest economy rate of any bowler who bowled 100+ overs in the league. After bowling 0/29 in two overs, he overtakes Hardik Pandya at the top of the charts with an economy of 9.07.

3 – Before today’s 19*(21) while chasing, MS Dhoni’s each of last three double digit scores have ended in losing cause. The last time Dhoni had a double digit score in a successful chase was while scoring 32*(35) against Delhi Capitals in his second match of IPL 2019.

17 – Total matches won by CSK against RCB, while losing only 9. This is their highest against any team – following 15 wins against DC, 14 wins against KXIP and KKR.

Stats from MI-RR match

2 – Hardik Pandya while reaching his fifty off 20 balls, achieved the second fastest fifty against Rajasthan Royals. The fastest was by David Miller in 19 balls in 2014, also in UAE.

1 – Hardik’s fifty is the second fastest by any player in an IPL match at Abu Dhabi. The next fastest is 22 balls by Dinesh Karthik against KXIP, fifteen days back.

6 – While Mumbai Indians scored 195, each of their top-6 batsmen hit at least one six. This is only the fifth time in IPL, with each of them in the last four seasons.

Delhi Capitals v SRH at Delhi, 2017
Chennai Super Kings v KKR at Chennai, 2018
Kings XI Punjab v MI at Indore, 2018
Kolkata Knight Riders v KXIP at Indore, 2018
Mumbai Indians v RR at Abu Dhabi, 2020

2 – This is the second hundred for Ben Stokes, both while chasing. He is the first ever player with multiple IPL hundreds while chasing. Stokes’ first IPL hundred came against Gujarat Lions in 2017, while playing for Rising Pune Supergiant.

1 – Ben Stokes is the first Rajasthan Royals player to score an IPL hundred in a successful chase. Yusuf Pathan scored a hundred in an unsuccessful chase for RR in 2010, which was also against Mumbai Indians.

152 – Total runs added by Ben Stokes and Sanju Samson, which is the second highest partnership in IPL for third or lower wicket, and the highest while chasing. The highest was by Cameron White and Kumar Sangakkara, playing for Deccan Chargers in 2012.

148 – Azhar Mahmood & Shaun Marsh for KXIP v MI, 2013
145* – Manish Pandey & Robin Uthappa for PWI v DC, 2012

1 – The result of the match officially ruled out Chennai Super Kings out of the playoffs for the first time in IPL. Prior to this season, CSK reached the playoffs in all the 10 seasons they took part, while reaching finals in 8 of them. This is the second time a Dhoni-led team couldn’t qualify for playoffs.
