Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as always, held an out-of-the-league kinda presence about them at the auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

When everyone anticipated CSK to rebuild and revamp with the next three-year cycle in mind, they topped their four prominent retentions with full intent on bringing back some of their familiar faces.

This was most evident when CSK broke their bank in getting back pace allrounder Deepak Chahar. CSK shed a whopping sum of INR 14 crores in regaining their pace allrounder, whose winning bid left everyone shocked.

The tendency to trust and fall for familiar faces – one of the integral aspects of MS Dhoni’s captaincy – was also on display when CSK made the emotional bid to get Dwayne Bravo and Ambati Rayudu back in their squad.

The signal was clear: CSK aren’t looking too far ahead and believe in taking care of the present, which sees them try and defend their crown after last year’s magnificent triumph. CSK displayed inspirational fighting abilities, winning their fourth IPL title with an ageing but experienced squad after having faced a first-ever league exit in the previous edition in UAE.

Strongest Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Playing XI for IPL 2022:

Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (wk & c), Deepak Chahar, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Dwayne Bravo, Adam Milne

First up at the top, CSK have replaced their strong in-form opener Faf du Plessis with New Zealand’s promising left-hander Devon Conway as one notable change from their first-choice XI from last season. Keeping Gaikwad, Uthappa, Rayudu with them in the post-Raina era gives CSK variety and depth in their batting.

Talking of variety and depth, the mantra for CSK was simple when they retained Moeen and Jadeja and went full-force to regain Deepak and Bravo at the auction. It was to continue holding multiple utility allround options up their sleeves. Multiple such players in the first XI give them depth in the batting and allow them to play out more positive match-ups with the ball than the opposition.

The successful end to IPL 2021 was also expected to bring about an end to MS Dhoni’s tenure as captain and player for CSK. But it seems, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter will remain at the helm for at least one more season. Dhoni, honestly quite unlike him, also talked last year about having a farewell match in front of the Chennai crowd. Retained for INR 12 crores, Dhoni’s presence, either way, keeps CSK’s strongest pillar intact as his captaincy credentials still count for a lot to his team.
