Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) entered the two-day mega auction for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 with high hopes of reconstructing a robust squad and going one step further in the competition to clinch their first-ever title.

After years of toil and disappointments, RCB seem to be turning a corner for themselves in the IPL. The team broke their longstanding playoffs jinx in the 2020 edition and repeated the feat in the following season. Playing on neutral surfaces in UAE and India, RCB displayed greater depth about them and made it past the league stage before faltering at the last few hurdles.

With the ambition to cross the final stage and lift that coveted trophy, the RCB management led by director of cricket Mike Hesson and head coach Sanjay Bangar stepped into the bidding war and made some notable buys.

Not only have RCB piled on a strong contingent for the season ahead but also seem to have finalised a talented first-choice XI for what will be a ten-team IPL 2022, including two new franchises Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans.

As the squad and the likely first XI indicates, RCB are one of the disadvantaged teams of the retention and release process as they’ve lost some of their Indian core from the last year’s IPL.

The team did bring back Harshal Patel to their line-up but lost young opener Devdutt Padikkal, promising allrounder Washington Sundar and veteran wristspinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

The inclusion of Faf du Plessis, Dinesh Karthik, Wanindu Hasaranga, Mahipal Lomror and Jason Behrendorff, however, is still expected to retain RCB’s competitiveness even as their middle-order looks relatively inexperienced following the retirement of AB de Villiers.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Captain for IPL 2022

While RCB don’t officially have a new full-time skipper on board, it is expected that South African opener Faf Du Plessis will be the man to take them forward. The decision by Virat Kohli to relinquish his leadership duties has left the spot vacant. But in Du Plessis, RCB have an experienced and capable individual, who walks into their first XI, to replace Kohli at the helm. Du Plessis was the second highest run-maker of IPL 2021 with 633 runs before being released by Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Mike Hesson is RCB’s director of cricket, while Sanjay Bangar is the team’s new full-time head coach following the departure of Simon Katich from the scene. RCB have also had Malolan Rangarajan, their head scout and fielding coach, working behind the scenes.
