Nathan Smith has been exhibiting some exhilarating skills of his in the New Zealand Super Smash T20 tournament by taking some absolute blinders and also chipping in with some fantastic stops on the boundary. But this time, he chipped in with his unorthodox mastery in the final over of the game, with his side needing 9 runs to win the game.

Wellington Firebirds were locking horns with Otago in Queenstown, and the latter scored 166 runs batting first for the loss of 7 wickets. Anaru Kitchen got a half-century for the side, propelling them to a match-winning total. Wellington got a stellar start from Finn Allen, who chipped in with a 13-ball 32, and a half-century from Tim Robinson, which got them to within a touching distance of the target.

With 9 runs needed off the final over, Nathan Smith was on strike for Wellington and Jacob Duffy was asked to bowl the over. Off the first ball, Smith walked sideways towards the offside and ramped the ball behind the wicket for a six. The best part of the shot was that Duffy had bowled it short and slow watching Smith make the movement, but the 23-year-old adjusted equally brilliantly.

Smith went on to hit another six over mid-wicket to complete the proceedings and finished with an unbeaten 18-ball 38, helping his side win by 5 wickets.

He is known to produce some of the most acrobatic fielding efforts on the boundary, let it be to collect catches or to prevent boundaries. Against Canterbury last month, he produced one of the catches of the season by collecting a catch, pulling it inside the boundary and grabbing the rebound with an eye-popping dive.

Going further behind to January 2021, he ran many meters to dive and pick up a pretty weird catch, one which even surprised the fielder himself. He stretched every possible muscle in his body to get a hand on the ball, and perhaps he was surprised by his own reach.
