Suresh Raina announces retirement from International Cricket

Moments after former Indian captain MS Dhoni announced his retirement, his long-time teammate Suresh Raina, too, announced that he has decided to hang up his boots in International Cricket.

One of India’s most reliable middle-order batsmen in limited-overs formats in the previous decade and a half, Raina, much like Dhoni, made the announcement on Instagram. He wrote, “It was nothing but lovely playing with you, @mahi7781 . With my heart full of pride, I choose to join you in this journey. Thank you India. Jai Hind.”

Raina holds the distinction of being the first Indian Cricketer to score a hundred in all three formats of the game. He is also the first Indian to score a hundred in T20 Internationals. He achieved that feat against South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2010 in the West Indies.

Raina had made his international debut against Sri Lanka in 2005. Five years later, he made his Test debut against the same side and scored a century in his first outing. A member of 2011 World Cup-winning team, Raina was also part of the Dhoni-led side that won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. He kept his place for the 2015 World Cup but became an irregular member of the side following that.

Raina has ended his International career having played 18 Tests, 226 One Day Internationals, and 78 T20Is, scoring 7,988 runs and taking 62 wickets altogether. He last played for India in the 3-match T20 series in England in 2018.
