Suryakumar’s innings helped me relax: Quinton de Kock

Mumbai Indians opening batsman Quinton de Kock, who got the Mumbai Indians off to a great start to their chase of 163 against the Delhi Capitals in the second of the two IPL matches yesterday, scoring 53 and providing a good platform for the middle-order, said that the intent with which Suryakumar Yadav, with whom de Kock put up a 46-run partnership, played after walking in to bat helped the South African ease in.

De Kock told IPLT20.com, “When Surya came in, we just naturally assessed what we were dealing with out there. Did help that when he walked out there, he had intent. He was off to a flier with boundaries and rotated the strike. It helped me at my end too and helped me relax. We just naturally batted well together and toughed it out really well.”

Suryakumar ended up with the same score as de Kock eventually, with the Mumbai batsman mixing up power and finesse against the likes of Rabada and Nortje, as he did against the Rajasthan Royals. “To be honest, I don’t think I am brave enough to play any of them,” de Kock said of some of the Suryakumar’s shots he would like to borrow. “But if I can reverse lap Jofra Archer, I wish I could do that. That’s about it.”

Mumbai Indians are now back at the top of the table and de Kock, the player of the match against Delhi Capitals, expects great things now that they have some momentum on their side.

“We are a team that keeps it simple,” he said. “We know where our strengths lie and we try to bring them into every game. Once or twice, we haven’t been able to and come second best. But we have a bit of momentum now. We have really good players in our team. If it’s not one then the other is going to do that for the team.”
