Despite losing their openers very early, Birmingham Phoenix were able to keep themselves in the chase of The Hundred men’s final at Lord’s this Saturday (August 21) because of a fantastic counterattacking stand between skipper Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone.

Chasing the difficult 169-run target against Southern Brave, the duo took their team to 70/2 from 45 balls despite joining each other at 14/2 from 19 deliveries.

While Moeen played the anchor, Livingstone went on the offensive to put the pressure back on the opposition. He was in stellar form and blazed his willow for an outstanding cameo of 46 in 19 balls.

It was clear at that stage, if Southern Brave were to get back in the contest and reignite hopes for a win, they had to get the better of Livingstone and do it quickly.

Tim David pulled off an excellent run out in The Hundred men’s final at Lord’s.

Tim David continues to shine

It was then Tim David who came to their rescue and delivered a memorable run out to send Livingstone back to the pavilion. The momentum-shifting breakthrough came via a spectacular throw from the deep of David’s hands.

As Livingstone hit pacer Chris Jordan through the off-side, the mid-wicket fieldsman made a failed attempted dive to grab hold of what would also have been an unforgettable piece of fielding. But nevertheless, even as the ball dropped short of the diving sweeper and ricochet off his hands, Tim David quickly came around and picked up the ball to aim directly for the stumps at the striker’s end.

One could fault Livingstone for perhaps a not-so-alert effort to complete a two, but given how David absolutely nailed his throw, even a quicker second run might not have seen him back safely.

That run-out completely transformed the game back in the Southern Brave’s favour as they inflicted a mini-collapse, including the wicket of a well-set Moeen, and went on to clinch victory by a margin of 32 runs, successfully defending their score of 168/5.
