Much to the excitement of cricket fans, the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is back after a one-year hiatus. The district-based state T20 tournament had to be cancelled last year due to COVID-19 pandemic but is now back amid a great sense of anticipation.

The TNPL 2021 will see eight teams – Chepauk Super Gillies, Lyca Kovai Kings, Dindigul Dragons, Trichy Warriors, iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, Siechem Madurai Panthers, Salem Spartans and Nellai Royal Kings – facing each other once, before the top 4 sides make it through to the playoffs.

Chepauk Super Gillies are the defending champions of TNPL 2021, having clinched the coveted title back in the 2019 edition where Dindigul Dragons finished runners-up. The Super Gilles also won the TNPL trophy back in 2017.

The TNPL 2021 kicked off on Monday (July 19) with an opening day fixture between Lyca Kovai Kings taking on Salem Spartans, followed by the clash among Chepauk Super Gillies and IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans the next day. Unfortunately, however, both the fixtures were marred by bad weather and had to end in no results.

Tournament organisers, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), will be hoping for some respite from the weather so that the rest of the tournament fixtures aren’t spoiled by the ongoing monsoons in India.
