‘This is their greatest’ – Twitterati erupts as Dad’s Army Chennai Super Kings win 4th IPL title
Chennai Super Kings won their fourth IPL title, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2021 IPL final comprehensively. It seemed like the Knight Riders were in the game to chase down a massive total, but CSK bowlers picked up momentum right towards the end and pulled their team past the winning mark.
Chennai batted first and put up 192 runs on the board. They got a feisty start in the powerplay with Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who added 61 runs for the opening wicket. Ruturaj played some delightful shots to get the innings going, and managed to go past KL Rahul in the Orange Cap race. Sunil Narine sent him back and broke the partnership, which opened up an opportunity for KKR to fight back.
They tied the Chennai batters in the next couple of overs, but Robin Uthappa denied letting the momentum slide away. He hit three massive sixes en route a 16-ball 31, and it also allowed Faf du Plessis to change gears. The Proteas superstar completed his half-century shortly after Uthappa’s dismissal, and let Moeen Ali take over the baton in the final overs.

Moeen Ali chipped in with a 20-ball 37 and remained unbeaten, whilst Faf du Plessis was dismissed off the final ball of the innings after scoring 86 in 59 balls, as Chennai Super Kings posted 192 runs batting first. Sunil Narine picked up 2 wickets for the purple army, who otherwise had a forgettable day with the ball.
Iyer and Gill provide a start, but middle-order collapse sees CSK through
MS Dhoni dropped a presentable opportunity, which Venkatesh Iyer a major lifeline. Iyer did not let that opportunity slip away, and kept the required rate well within check. His off-side play was a treat to watch, as he threaded the ball beautifully to get some boundaries.
Gill supported his partner well and the duo were scoring at 9 an over after the 10th over. Venkatesh Iyer got to his fifty and just as panic was about weave its way into CSK camp, Shardul Thakur provided a deadly breakthrough. He dismissed the left-handed opener with a well-disguised cutter, and that prompted an unprecedented fallout.
Kolkata middle order lost their way after that, losing wickets at regular intervals. Their middle order had a huge hole with Rahul Tripathi struggling with a hamstring injury, and evidently, they just went downward. Kolkata lost their next 8 wickets scoring just 63 runs and were reduced to 165 runs in their 20 overs. CSK won the final by 27 runs, and it set the fireworks going.

MS Dhoni is the first ever player to win an IPL title after the age of 40.

Not sure which comeback is better.
The one in 2018 to straightaway win the title after returning to the IPL or the comeback they’ve made this year after the disastrous 2020?
No one gave this ageing squad a chance. This is one incredible franchise. #CSK

Of CSK’s four IPL titles, this is their greatest. The extension of the auction cycle arguably hurt them more than any other team because they had an ageing squad – but Dhoni & Fleming have taught an old dog new tricks & conjured another IPL win. #IPLFinal
