Twitterati divided after KL Rahul non-catch creates controversy in close game
KL Rahul’s innings itself split opinions on Friday night, but a bigger moment in the game came when he was caught out (or appeared to be) in the deep by Rahul Tripathi diving forward in the 19th over. A short ball from Shivam Mavi was swivelled and pulled towards the deep where Tripathi ran in and dove forward to complete a spectacular catch. Well, almost.
The third umpire was consulted to check if the catch was taken cleanly and the replays painted a bleak picture. The third umpire, Anil Dandekar, went through multiple replays to see if the ball had touched the grass before the catch was taken.
It appeared as though it hadn’t, but on multiple ‘rock and rolls’, the TV umpire declared that the ball had been grassed just after the catch was completed. In a controversial moment he declared that he had made the decision and that the catch was not clean.
With the game neatly poised at 11 to win from 10 balls, and Rahul, on a half-century, and clearly holding Punjab Kings’ hopes, it turned out to be a crucial moment in the game.
Twitterati were divided over the controversial decision by the umpire and made it clear on the platform.

I couldn’t agree more with @Swannyg66 on commentary. Anyone who has played even club cricket, will know that catch was fair and square . Third umpire needs a refresher course on the sport! #KKRvPBKS

Eoin Morgan later said at the post match presentation – “I thought in real time that was out. Obviously, it didn’t go our way. A wicket there would have been nice”.
How is that not out?#IPL2021 #PBKS #KKRvPBKS

THE MOMENT THAT KL RAHUL ESCAPED – WAS THAT OUT?
KKR went on to lose the game as Shahrukh Khan balsted a six later in the game although there were a few other tense moments as KL Rahul was out caught in the final over shortly after smashing a boundary in the same over the controversial catch was decided not out.

Later in the post-match show by Star, Gautam Gambhir heavily criticised the decision, calling it a “shocker”.
“This can end someone’s campaign. All the hard work you have put for months and months and suddenly it boils down to something as this, which was clearly out. He shouldn’t even have seen the replay more than once. Even without the slow motion cameras, it just looked out. Things could have changed [if that were given out]. We have seen how Punjab Kings panic in the last over and probably after that KL hit one boundary am not sure [He did]. Things could have changed,” he concludes.
