USA, Oman, Namibia and Zimbabwe are among 17 member countries to have expressed interest in hosting ICC events in the next rights cycle spanning 2024-31, cricket’s world governing body confirmed on Monday (July 5).

The other member nations to express their keenness and offer initial submissions to get hosting rights (in entirety or partly) for the eight major ICC events scheduled post 2023 are India, England, Australia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, UAE, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand.

The next ICC events cycle include two ODI World Cups (2027 and 2031), four T20 World Cups (2024, 2026, 2028, 2030) and two editions of the Champions Trophy (2025 and 2029), which has been revived after getting disbanded in the previous cycle.

After inviting ICC members to submit a preliminary technical proposal as a potential host, the governing body has received submissions of interest for individual and joint hosting rights of the events talked about above.

There are eight major ICC events scheduled during the next rights cycle

“We are delighted with the response from our Members to hosting ICC men’s white-ball events post 2023. This process gives us an opportunity to extend our range of hosts and grow interest in cricket worldwide reaching more fans whilst creating a long-term legacy for the sport,” ICC’s acting CEO Geoff Allardice said in a media release.

Allardice confirmed that the ICC will now move forward to the second phase of the process to finalise hosting nations. In the coming phase, member countries will be asked to provide a more detailed proposal post their expression of interest. Following this, an ultimate call will be taken to award them hosting rights or not.

In their release, the ICC also said that the hosting nations for the four scheduled finals of the World Test Championship (2025, 2027, 2029 and 2031) as well the ICC women’s and U-19 events will be determined via a separate process, which will be initiated later in the year.

As per recent reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is hoping to bid and get the hosting rights for three of those eight ICC events, mainly one ODI World Cup, a Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup.

The Indian board arrived at its call during its last apex council meeting. However, it is “not keen on paying any hosting fee”, reported PTI. The BCCI also remains non-committal to get the tax exemption from the Indian government to host any major ICC events.
