WATCH: Virat Kohli unleashes picture-perfect stunning cover drive to announce he is back

A lot has been made about Virat Kohli’s drop in form over the last few years. The run machine, who is chasing Sachin Tendulkar‘s record of 100 centuries, has failed to register a triple digit score since November 2019. Lately, he has been the victim of edging the ball to the wicket keeper or the slip which has acted like a chink in his armor.

However, the 32-year-old has shown signs of being back to his best in the on-going Test against England. While batting on 27 (60), Virat Kohli hit a sensational cover drive off of Chris Woakes’ bowling in his trademark style. Although it wasn’t the best of deliveries, Virat Kohli looked in supreme control while hitting the shot.

After the humiliating defeat in the Leeds Test match, it was always going to be important to start strong at the Oval. Despite the top order perishing quickly, Virat Kohli ensured that a repeat of the first innings at Leeds did not occur. He scored a half century before being dismissed in the same fashion as he was in the last Test (edged and taken).

Kohli hit an individual milestone during his knock as he became the fastest batsman to score 23,000 runs across all forms of cricket. He overtook the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, reaching the 23,000 run mark in his 490th inning.

The Indian captain is only the 7th batsmen to reach the 23,000 landmark. The other 6 batsmen are the aforementioned Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, Sri Lankan legendary duo of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, Rahul Dravid and Proteas all-rounder Jacques Kallis.

The Indian batsmen were being caught behind far too many times and the situation hasn’t changed in the first innings of the ongoing test match. Jonny Bairstow has already claimed three catches at the time of writing and India are in a spot of bother (106/5 after 46 overs).

England were clear favorites after the massive win in the 3rd test match and their position of dominance has only become clearer as the first innings has progressed. It will require a proper team effort by India if they are to get anything from this match.
