It was a fascinating day’s play at Lord’s. The fourth day of this second Test match saw 181 runs being scored and six wickets fell as the game heads to an exciting finish. It may seem a dull day if you look at the numbers but there was a lot of drama involved.

The Indian openers ‘failed’ for the first time in the series as both KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma didn’t get substantial scores. Mark Wood was the one who got the wicket of both batters.

India skipper Virat Kohli looked in good touch and was looking quite fluent before he went fishing and poked at a widish delivery from Sam Curran.

India were in trouble at 55/3 (effectively 28/3) but senior batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane put their hands up and bailed India out of troubled waters. They didn’t exactly put India in a comfortable or a safe position but they made vital contributions.

Pujara battled hard for 205 balls and scored 45 before Wood broke the 100-run stand. Rahane notched up a good half-century and got 61 before he was out caught-behind to Moeen Ali. Ravindra Jadeja got a peach from Ali and had his off-stump knocked over. From 155/3, India slipped to 175/6 in no time.

Moreover, the second new-ball was due five balls after Jadeja got out. However, with the light deteriorating, England were forced to employ their spinners. England skipper Joe Root and Moeen Ali bowled an over each before the umpires decided to take the players off due to bad light.

However, just before the two on-field umpires took that call, there was drama. Kohli seemed quite animated in the Indian dressing room on that famous Lord’s balcony. From the 81st over onwards, he tried indicating to the batters (Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma) to talk to the umpires about the light.

In the 82nd over, he finally caught the attention of Ishant who then spoke to the umpires but play continued for that over. Rohit Sharma joined Kohli in expressing his displeasure over play being continued despite the light not being the best. Both of them were seen indicating that the light isn’t good enough for play to continue.

At the end of the 82nd over, England also wanted to take the new-ball but the umpires did not allow that and England didn’t want to continue with their spinners. Hence, the umpires called off the day due to bad light with eight overs to spare.
