Aussie opener David Warner will not be available for the first Day/Night pink ball game between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval, starting on December 17.

After Warner missed the Canberra ODI and then the entire T20I series against India, Cricket Australia would’ve expected their talismanic opener to be fit for the first Test match but the player himself has confirmed that he will need “another 10 days” to achieve peak fitness.

“I feel I have made great progress in a short amount of time and it’s best for me to stay here in Sydney to continue working on getting back to full fitness,” Warner said.

“The injury feels a lot better, but I need to be able to satisfy in my own mind and to my team-mates that it is 100 per cent ready for Test match conditions.

“That includes running between the wickets and being agile in the field. Right now I feel I am short of being able to play at peak fitness and another 10 days will make a difference.”

Pucovski in line to replace Warner

During the fielding in the second ODI against India in Sydney, Warner injured his adductor muscle and was immediately taken off the limited-overs squad as a precaution ahead of the red-ball series. The New South Wales opener will now stay back in Sydney while others will move to Adelaide to get their preparation going.

Will Pucovski is the next man on the line to make his Test debut in Adelaide despite being hit on his head by a Kartik Tyagi bouncer during the first warm-up game. He was retired up immediately but looked in no pain while returning to the team bus at the end of the day.
