Right-arm medium fast bowler Reuben Wilson has emerged as a bright prospect for Ireland cricket at a tender age of 15. The pacer is currently honing his skills in the U19 World Cup in the West Indies and hasn’t flattered to deceive by any stretch of the imagination.

The youngster had a reasonable outing against Sri Lanka in their warm-up match in Providence where he picked up a solitary wicket for 41 runs. But the seamer didn’t get a chance of play Ireland’s first two Group B matches against Uganda and India.

Wilson eventually got his chance in the match against South Africa on Friday, January 21. At the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba in Trinidad, Wilson showed his skills with the cherry in hand. To start with, he got of opener Valintine Kitime, who failed to open his account.

Thereafter, the Young Turk got rid of left-hander Gerhardus Maree with an absolute peach. In the fourth ball of the 12th over, the young prodigy bowled a good length delivery that jagged back into Maree, who couldn’t get bat to ball.

Maree tried to play a defensive shot on the front foot, but the ball rattled his woodwork. Wilson was over the moon after churning out the dream delivery against Maree, who had gotten his eyes in after scoring 14 runs with one four.

Wilson was the pick of the Ireland bowlers as he finished with figures of 9-0-59-2. Liam Doherty also accounted for two scalps, but he leaked runs at an economy rate of 8.60. Matthew Humphreys, Jamie Forbes and Scott MacBeth got one wicket apiece. After opting to bat first, South Africa posted 315 for the loss of seven wickets.

Dewald Brevis missed out on his second ton of the tournament after getting out on 96, but skipper George van Heerden scored 111 off 93 with three fours and as many as eight sixes. Mickey Copeland’s 18-ball 43 propelled the Proteas past the 300-run mark.
