Day 3 of the first England-India Test in Trent Bridge saw lower-order batsman Jasprit Bumrah blaze his willow for an entertaining and crucial knock of 28. Bumrah’s effort helped India extend their first-innings lead to a significant 95 after being only 49 ahead at the point they lost their eighth wicket.

The ace quick, who had taken four wickets on Day 1 of the Test match to end with figures of 4/46, contributed vital runs, with his innings featuring as many as three fours and a maximum.

The right-hander took a special liking to the bowling of all-rounder Sam Curran, whom he got away for two fours and one outstanding six through the square-leg region.

But that wasn’t the first time an Indian lower-order batsman had taken the attack to an English speedster in a Test match in UK.

Ashish Nehra took on Andrew Flintoff in the Lord’s 2002 Test match.

Former India left-arm paceman Ashish Nehra is known more for his exploits with the ball and also his exciting commentary style post retirement. But Nehra was once also involved in a memorable passage of play as a batsman, where he went after England seamer Andre Flintoff in the closing stages of the Lord’s Test in 2002.

With the visitors on the verge of a heavy defeat in the first Test of the four-match series, Indian players sitting in the famous Lord’s balcony wore a sombre look about them. But they were left in splits when the affable ‘Nehra ji’ pulled off the unbelievable, hitting Flintoff for a well-timed six through mid-wicket.

Even the jam-packed crowd in the stadium stood up and applauded as the touring No.11 smashed the England fast bowler for an unforgettable stroke.

Anticipating a bouncer next ball, Ashish Nehra defended the delivery watchfully. But he still managed to rub salt into Flintoff’s wounds by guiding a boundary through slips on the following ball.

Nehra stitched a tenth-wicket stand of 63 runs with Ajit Agarkar, who made a fabulous maiden Test century in that innings. Nehra scored 19 off those runs, lasting 54 deliveries at the crease.
