WATCH: Bangladesh make a case for worst ever DRS review

A team notorious for some desperate reviews, even by their standards, Bangladesh on Tuesday (January 4) reached a new peak in terms of their worst ever instances of DRS taken. This incident is from Day 4 of the ongoing New Year’s Test in Mount Maunganui against New Zealand.

Pushing hard for an unlikely Test win on New Zealand soil for the first time, Bangladesh have New Zealand on the mat. After dismissing the opposition for an unideal 328, they went to take a vital 130-run lead before building inroads into the Kiwi line-up again.

They got the Kiwis down to 90/2 when a hilarious review reflected the tourists’ urgency and desperate attempt to try and pull off a victory. The incident came during the 37th over of the New Zealand second-innings where pacer Taskin Ahmed bowled a wholehearted yorker against Ross Taylor.

Taskin bowled a full pitched delivery that he would’ve loved to see sneak through Taylor’s downswing. Instead, the ball hit the meaty part of Taylor’s bat and was obviously not out. But since all of it happened in a split of a second, and Taylor had his toe and the front pad quite close to the bat, Bangladesh came to the conclusion that they have their man plumb in front for an LBW call.

Having appealed but seen the umpire not raise his finger, they went for the review where all their hopes were crashed by the technology. The close-in replay of the delivery reinforced the fact that Taylor had made a clean and absolutely clear connect with the bat. The ball, in fact, never made contact with the pad.

The moment the replay was played on screen, it became clear that Taylor is not out and that Bangladesh have erred with probably their worst ever DRS review in Test cricket. Closely rivalling with their decision to review a straight dead-bat defence by Indian skipper Virat Kohli during a one-off Test in Hyderabad in early 2017.
