The Sydney derby Thunder versus Sixers encounter in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2021-22 on Sunday (December 26) saw a hilarious incident involving all-rounders Ben Cutting and Dan Christian.

Cutting had a brainfade on the field as he threw the ball in celebration presuming a caught dismissal, completely forgetting that it was a free-hit delivery. As the ball lobbed up in the air, Dan Christian took his opportunity and ran two.

The incident took place on the fourth ball of the 16th over – the final over of the innings in a rain-marred fixture – where Thunder quick Nathan McAndrew bowled a sharp yorker to Christian after having erred with a no-ball on the previous delivery.

While the delivery from McAndrew was very good, Christian could still get underneath and smash the ball through to the extra cover region. But he ended up hitting it absolutely straight to Ben Cutting, who took a fantastic diving catch.

Recognising it’s a free-hit, and that he couldn’t be out, Christian quickly ran across for a single. But then the drama began, as Christian and his batting partner Jordan Silk saw Cutting curiously throw the ball up in the air if he has just helped dismiss the batter.

Ben Cutting only a second later realised his mistake and went up to collect the ball and throw it to the wicketkeeper. But by then the train had left, with Christian and Silk completing an easy two.

While it was a moment of disappointment and displeasure for Cutting, McAndrew and rest of the Thunder team, Christian and Silk obviously saw the funny side of it.

Christian offered a big beaming smile towards his partner with face claps on his bat, to which Silk also responded and started laughing. Seeing those two laugh, even the commentators joined in the fun.
