England allrounder Ben Stokes was part of an interesting non-dismissal on Friday (January 7), the Day 3 of the New Year’s Ashes 2021-22 Test at SCG, as he was given out LBW despite the ball clearly hitting his stump and not the pads.

It was a case of mixed fortunes for Stokes, who was lucky enough that the bails didn’t fall off but also unfortunate that the umpire erred in his judgement of the LBW call.

The DRS, thankfully, came to the left-hander’s rescue, allowing him to resume his innings as he strived to keep England in the game.

The eye-catching incident happened off the first ball of the 31st over in the England first-innings where Ben Stokes was facing Australian allrounder Cameron Green, who was operating from around-the-wicket angle.

Ben Stokes saved by DRS after incorrect LBW call

As Green bowled a short, incoming ball to him, Ben Stokes shouldered arms, anticipating the delivery to go comfortably above the stumps. As it happened, though, it was fuller than what the batter had expected and went on to clip the outer part of the leg-stump.

However, with Stokes’ front pad seemingly near the ball in real-time action, standing umpire Paul Reiffel assumed that it hit the pad on its way to clipping the stumps and gave the batter out LBW.

Stokes, aware of what had actually happened, immediately went for the review where the matter was cleared by the technology, which revealed that the left-hander was incorrectly given out LBW but was definitely lucky that he escaped a normal bowled dismissal.

 

Usually the lightened stumps employed for D/N Tests in Australia have heavier bails than the normal ones used in all day Test matches, which makes the Stokes instance a very rare one on the field. Also, the delivery from Green was bowled at fairly high speed.

The moment the replay was played on the giant screen and the on-field decision was overturned, Stokes couldn’t help but find the funny side of things and offered a big smile towards the Australian team, who were denied another breakthrough by a piece of misfortune.
