WATCH: Ben Stokes slams MS Dhoni-style one-legged six to bring up 5000 Test runs

Ben Stokes, on Thursday, March 17, brought up 5000 runs in his illustrious Test career and he accomplished the milestone in style. In the 114th over of England’s first innings of their second Test against the West Indies, the left-hander went berserk. The southpaw took the attack to fast bowler Alzarri Joseph and put him to the swords at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown in Barbados.

He started the over with a crashing four through the cover region. The shot also brought up the 100-run stand between Stokes and Joe Root, who scored 153 runs off 316 balls with 14 fours. In the next ball, Stokes took the aerial route and fetched another four through the cover region. Thereafter, Stokes peppered the leg side boundary and collected a four through deep midwicket.

The shot of the over came in the next ball. Joseph bowled a full-length delivery and Stokes middled the ball to absolute perfection. Stokes creamed the ball over long on for a colossal six. When he played the shot, his right-leg was up in the air. He also drew applauses from the commentators for brining up 5000 Test runs with sheer authority.

The shot Stokes played was reminiscent of the one MS Dhoni played during an ODI against Australia back in 2012. During a game in a tri-series, India needed 13 runs to win off the last over. The equation came down to 12 runs off four balls and the pressure was on the Men in Blue.

That’s when Dhoni pulled off a magnificent six over long on and brought India back into the game. Clint McKay bowled a full-length delivery and Dhoni cleared the boundary downtown with utmost ease. Dhoni’s left-leg was in the air when he pulled off the 112 meter six off McKay.

As far as Stokes is concerned, he went on to score 120 runs off 128 with 11 fours and six sixes. West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite dismissed him to cut short his stay in the middle. On the back of his knock, England declared their innings at 507 for nine. At the close of play on Day two, West Indies are trailing by 436 runs with nine wickets left in their first innings.
