Usually associated with brute power-hitting, New Zealand left-hander Colin Munro on Sunday (August 29) showcased his street smarts as well.

Munro stole a bye in an interesting manner to bring his more in-flow batting partner Tim Seifert back to the striker’s end for the last ball of a CPL 2021 encounter against St Lucia Kings.

The Trinbago Knight Riders batsman almost waited for the wicketkeeper to complete his throw at his end and hit the stumps before running across for a single, avoiding any chance of a run-out.

Colin Munro’s stolen bye sparks debate

The incident is from the penultimate ball of the Knight Riders’ run-chase. Needing another seven runs for victory, the defending CPL champions were desperate to have their more in-form batter Seifert facing the last ball.

While Munro had largely struggled at the crease for his 45-ball 40 up until that point, Seifert had blasted his way through to a knock of 39 from 15 deliveries.

Unable to get going all innings, Munro missed another delivery, but recognising that Knight Riders’ win would fall out of equation if he stayed on strike with 7 needed off the last ball, he made a very clever attempt at stealing a bye.

It’s debatable whether it was intentional or not, but Colin Munro timed his run to perfection as he turned around and ran across only when Kings’ wicketkeeper Andre Fletcher had thrown the ball halfway in the air and it was almost certain that it will be shattering the stumps.

It meant that there was no chance of either Seifert or him getting run-out and single not being counted towards the Knight Riders’ score.

But despite Seifert getting back on strike, the last year’s winners had settle with a defeat, with Munro’s fellow Kiwi cricketer managing to get only one run off the final delivery against left-arm pacer Wahab Riaz.
