Back in February, Sri Lanka fast bowler announced that he would be retiring from international cricket after the Test series against India. On Monday, March 14, the pacer had his last day at the highest level after he played in the second game of the two-match series at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

Lakmal didn’t have much to do in the game as the Lankan spin trio of Lasith Embuldeniya, Praveen Jayawickrama and Dhananjaya de Silva did the chunk of the work in the bowling department. While chasing 447, the Lankans were bowled out for 208 in 59.3 overs and hence, lost the match by 238 runs.

On Day three when India were closing in on the victory, Lakmal came to bat and managed only one run off four balls. Jasprit Bumrah cleaned him up with a fast in-swinging yorker. Thereafter, Lakmal got a round of applause from the crowd present at the venue in Bangalore as he walked back for the last time in international cricket.

Bumrah, who picked up three wickets in the second innings, went up to Lakmal and gave him a pat on the back. In the very next over, Ravi Ashwin accounted for Vishwa Fernando’s wicket and pulled the curtains down on the match.

Lakmal, who celebrated his 35th birthday on Friday, March 10, made his international debut against India itself in an ODI back in December 2009. In the next two years, the speedster forayed into the other two formats of the game.

In 69 Tests, Lakmal went on to pick up 170 wickets with seven four-wicket hauls and four five-wicket hauls. In ODI and T20I cricket, he got a total of 117 scalps. Lakmal was also a handy batter as he scored over 1100 runs across formats with a top score of 42.

In the first innings of the Bangalore Test, Lakmal picked up the wicket of Axar Patel, who’s more than capable with the bat in hand. In the second innings of the game, he rolled his arms over for 10 overs, but failed to make a breakthrough for the visiting team.
