WATCH: Joshua da Silva takes a stunning low, diving catch to his left off inside edge | WI v ENG

Joshua da Silva has been an efficient wicketkeeper for the West Indies and he showed some of his skills during the first day’s play of the opening Test against England (WI v ENG, 1st Test) at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound in Antigua. In the fourth over of the game, he took a stunning catch to get rid of Zak Crawley and give fast bowler Jayden Seales an important wicket.

Crawley looked set as he smashed Seales for two fours in the second over of the game. First, he smashed a four down the ground and then collected a boundary through the cover region. But Seales had his revenge after getting rid of Crawley. Seales bowled a back-of-a-length delivery and the batter went for a cover drive, but could only manage an inside edge.

Da Silva was almost wrong-footed, but he got his left hand underneath the ball to complete the catch. Crawley went after scoring eight runs off 11 balls with two fours. In the second over, Crawley’s opening partner Alex Lees, who made his Test debut, also perished. The experienced Kemar Roach sent Lees back to the hut with an in-dipper.

England’s troubles didn’t end after both their openers, Lees and Crawley, perished in the single digits. In the ninth over, Roach pinned Three Lions skipper Joe Root, who was the leading Test run-scorer in the year 2021. The fast bowler bowled an in-swinger and the in-form batter shouldered arms at it. The ball went on to crash into the off stump.

Root hit three fours on his way to a 14-ball knock of 13 before Roach sent him back. England came into the series, having lost the 2021-22 Ashes 4-0 to Australia. Thereafter, their team management sacked head coach Chris Silverwood and also left out quite a few players, including Stuart Broad and James Anderson, for the West Indies Tests.

The Caribbean team, led by Kraigg Brathwaite, also came into the series after losing 0-2 to Sri Lanka last year. Both teams are languishing at the bottom of the points table in the 2021-23 cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC).
