Kartik Tyagi

WATCH: 4 to win in the last over — Kartik Tyagi concedes just one run!!

Kartik Tyagi spurred the most incredible comeback in the history of the Indian Premier League as Rajasthan went from what appeared to be a terrible loss to a sensational win in the space of 10 extraordinary minutes of play.

Punjab Kings seemed to be cruising in their run-chase of 186, staying true to KL Rahul’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss. A century stand between Rahul and Mayank Agarwal put Punjab on course for a huge win. Despite losing the duo off successive overs, the required run rate was below six and with eight wickets remaining, the result seemed a foregone conclusion.

With three overs to go, PBKS needed 18 to win with 8 wickets in hand and Aiden Markram began the over with a massive six off South Africa teammate Chris Morris. 12 to win off 17.

Four more runs came from the over and the equation reduced to eight needed in two overs. Eight wickets still in hand.

Mustafizur Rahman then went on to bowl a terrific penultimate over that set the game up for something intriguing, although a Punjab loss seemed nearly impossible even then. Just four runs came off the over and Punjab needed four from the final over. Markram and Pooran were still at the crease.

Kartik Tyagi then went on to bowl a sensational final over against Markram.

The full Kartik Tyagi final over:

19.1 – DOT – A full toss – Markram misses out and could just drive to cover for no runs

19.2 – ONE RUN – Nearly a yorker, but more a full length ball. Ball goes off the inside half of Markram’s bat for a single to deep square leg.

19.3 – OUT – Nicholas Pooran edges behind a wide yorker while trying to dab the ball through third man.

19.4 – DOT – Deepak Hooda moves across the stumps, but Tyagi goes really wide with his yorker and Hooda leaves it, but the umpire does not call it a wide as Hooda had moved outside the off-stump

19.5 – OUT – Full ball outside off-stump. Hooda drives and edges through to the keeper.

—- 3 to win off one ball, 2 to make it a Super Over —-

19.6 – Full and wide delivery and Fabian Allen misses out on the drive.

A sensational win for Rajasthan Royals. Five dots in the final over by Kartik Tyagi and they have pulled a win out of nowhere. Tyagi, the under-19 star turned hero in the night with his rip-roaring final over. Punjab were to blame for missing out on opportunities, but take no credit away from this youngster who held his nerve under pressure.

Reactions abounded on social media as several flocked to praise Tyagi.

A superstar in the making for Rajasthan Royals, Kartik Tyagi was a star performer in the under-19 World Cup for India in 2019, finishing as the second highest wicket-taker for India behind Ravi Bishnoi. Often compared to Brett Lee for his action (Sanju Samson calls him Lee!), Tyagi’s rise has gone under the radar. With Jofra Archer out of the tournament, we could see Tyagi and Mustafizur share death over responsibilities this season for Rajasthan.
