Watch: Marnus Labuschagne bowling fiery medium pace for local club in grade cricket
At a time when Australia have been struggling to find robust batting options across formats, emergence of Queensland right-hand batsman Marnus Labuschagne in the last couple of years has been a cause of relief.
Labuschagne, who became Test cricket’s first concussion substitute in the Lord’s Ashes 2019 Test, has taken to international cricket like a fish to water.
While a T20I debut is still awaited, the 27-year-old has become an integral part of the Test and ODI outfits. He has played 18 Tests and 13 ODIs in his young but already flourishing career.
Marnus Labuschagne has now scored 1,885 Test runs for Australia at an average of 60.80 to go with 473 ODI runs at an average of 39.41 and strike-rate of 91.13.
Labuschagne ended the first cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) as its highest run-maker with 1,675 runs at 72.82 per innings, including five hundreds and nine half-centuries.
Apart from his splendid beginning as a Test player, he is also gradually becoming an important member of the ODI side and is considered crucial to Australia’s planning towards the 2023 World Cup in India as a middle-order anchor who can play spin well.

But Labuschagne’s exploits with the bat are well known, what isn’t associated with the cricketer so much is his ability to bowl. A decent part-time leg-spin option at the domestic level, he has chipped in with useful breakthroughs from time to time for Australia.
Yet, hardly anyone would be able to recall that Marnus Labuschagne once even bowled as a medium fast-bowler in competitive cricket. Representing his club Redlands Tigers CC in October last year, Labuschagne was seen bowling with decent steam and even ended up taking a wicket for his team.

The passion and determination that are evident when he bats for Australia were on show even while he represented his club in Queensland.
This, of course, was not the first time that Labuschagne made a return to play club cricket despite navigating through an extremely busy international calendar. The cricketer has been known for taking time out of his taxing schedule and feature occasionally for Redlands Tigers CC. He even makes it a point to interact with some of the aspiring young kids at the ground.

Labuschagne, who moved to Queensland from South Africa at a very young age, has been playing for Redlands Tigers CC since he was only 14. His first game with the club came back in the 2008-09 season during the Lord Taverners U-17 competition.
