Apart from many controversies that involved his name, former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin is remembered widely for his eye-catching batting style. Azharuddin mesmerised cricket fans with his delightful strokeplay for a decade and a half.

Making his international debut in 1984 as a promising youngster from Hyderabad, the elegant right-hander played 99 Tests and 334 ODIs for India with over 15,000 international runs, including 29 centuries and 79 half-centuries.

But for those who were fortunate enough to see “Azhar” – as they fondly called him – bat in his peak days, it is not the records but his attractive, freeflowing style of batting that stood out. Mohammad Azharuddin was never bogged down despite facing the best of bowlers and scored runs all over the world.

It must be so nostalgic, then, for Azharuddin’s fans to watch him bat again during the UAE T10 Friendship Cup held in Sharjah for the India Legends team. The 59-year-old turned the clock back on Saturday (March 5) with an astonishing hit through deep mid-wicket playing against the World Legends.

The terrific maximum, clips of which went viral on Twitter, was seen in its full glory during the 8th over of the India Legends innings.

Facing World Legends off-spinner Tilakaratne Dilshan, Mohammad Azharuddin danced down the track and got underneath a loopy full-pitched ball and dispatched with that well-known style and charisma towards the mid-wicket region in Sharjah.

It was an eye-catching hit, one that made Azhar’s millions of fans nostalgic on social media, as he smashed Dilshan with his characteristic style and belligerence.

An interesting aspect of Mohammad Azharuddin’s innings on Saturday was that he was seen batting alongside his son Mohammad Asaduddin and was playing again in Sharjah, a ground which would’ve brought a mix of happy and sad memories back for him.

A controversial figure, Azhar has moved on to administration since overcoming his ban and is the president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) right now.
