Almost everyone has caught up with Mohammad Rizwan and his magnificent rise as Pakistan’s first-choice all-format wicketkeeper-batter over the last two years. But hardly anyone would know that the wonderful cricketer is also an excellent athlete in the outfield.

Rizwan displayed his brilliance in the field during a domestic T20 match played last winter when he took one of the most astonishing catches seen on a cricket field. The ever-determined player made a jaw-dropping grab playing for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa against Sindh in the National T20 Cup 2020-21.

The memorable catch was on show during Match 23 of the tournament played in Rawalpindi where Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were defending a modest total of 138/9 in a tightly contested fixture against Sindh.

Mohammad Rizwan took a memorable catch during National T20 Cup 2020-21 in Pakistan.

Mohammad Rizwan’s excellent diving catch

At the start of the 19th over of the run-chase, Sindh lower-order batter Anwar Ali skied one up towards the mid-on region against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa pacer Musadiq Ahmed.

Failing to properly connect his big shot, Anwar could only lob the ball up in the air as it started falling towards the mid-on region. Given the situation, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had a long-on in place, which would’ve initially been a cause of relief for Anwar, who would’ve thought he is saved despite a miscued stroke.

But this is where Mohammad Rizwan showcased his magic. The fielder came running from as far as the extra cover region to the mid-on area and made a full-blooded horizontal dive to finish off the most brilliant piece of fielding one can expect to see in a domestic match.

Rizwan, who was leading Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, led from the front in those few moments of drama and magic as he lit up the ground and helped his team clinch another important breakthrough.

Despite Mohammad Rizwan’s excellent grab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lost the match by two wickets in the final over. But his outstanding catch remained in memories for a long, long time with fans lauding the Pakistan cricketer’s athleticism and enthusiasm over social media.

Ever since replacing Sarfaraz Khan at the back end of the year 2019, Rizwan has owned the wicketkeeper-batter’s slot across formats and has gradually grown in stature within the national set-up as a member of the leadership group led by Babar Azam.
