WATCH: Odean Smith breaks Chris Gayle’s bat; Gayle responds with 4, 4, 6, 4

Chris Gayle managed to provide some amazing moments throughout the Caribbean Premier League and in the second semifinal of the tournament yesterday, he provided a brilliant start for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Gayle and Evin Lewis thundered their way to a 76-run opening partnership. However, one of the moments of the game came in the 4th over bowled by Odeon Smith.

Gayle had smashed the first ball of the over towards the boundary towards covers and set the tone. But quite hilariously on the second delivery, when he tried to heave it over the top over the off-side, all he could do was find the bottom edge of the bat. Odean Smith’s out-swinging delivery managed to hit the toe of his bat, and tear the willow into two pieces.

The handle came off the bat while the lower part of it flew away from the batter. It turned out to be one of the most hilarious moments of the CPL, the final of which will be played between the Patriots and Saint Lucia Kings. Here’s the video of that incident that made rounds across social media.

Gayle responds in style, Odean Smith left jaw-dropped

The events that followed after the bat was changed provided no joy for Odean Smith, who just about missed out on a position in the T20 World Cup squad. He struck the first ball over mid-off for a boundary and found the inside edge of the next ball, just about skewing past the stumps to another boundary.

The next one was the best of the lot, smashing a short length delivery over covers for a six and followed that up with another boundary over third-man, accumulating 23 runs including a wide. The Patriots were chasing 179 runs in 20 overs, and courtesy a 27-ball 42 from Gayle and 39-ball 77 from Rajasthan Royals‘ new recruit Evin Lewis, they chased the total down with 13 balls remaining.
