17-year-old right-arm pacer Ahmed Khan has been generating a significant amount of pace and ruffling feathers in the ongoing U19 World Cup in the West Indies. On Saturday, January 22, during Pakistan’s Group C game against the Papua New Guinea (PNG), the fast bowler has given an account of the damage he can do with the leather in hand.

After electing to bat first, PNG found themselves in all sorts of trouble courtesy of Khan’s speed and venom. In his first spell, Khan had figures of 5-1-10-3 as he ran through PNG’s top order without much fuss. To start with, he got rid of both the openers, Christopher Kilapat and Boio Ray, but he churned out a dream delivery to the right-handed Peter Karoho.

Karoho started his knock with a cracking four off Khan in the third ball of the ninth over. To his dismay, in the fifth ball of the same over, Karoho was shown the road to the pavilion. Khan bowled a full length delivery and the right-handed batter tried to go for an almighty heave on the leg side. Karoho tried to go for a cross-batted shot, but floundered.

He missed the ball altogether and his off stump went for a walk. With the dismissal, PNG lost their third wicket with the score at 29 in 9.5 overs. The Swabi-born Khan, in the meantime, had managed to take Pakistan off to a flying start in the powerplay.

Pakistan have made an impressive start to their campaign in the World Cup as they have managed to qualify for the quarterfinals of the mega event. Khan started his campaign with a three-wicket haul against Canada in a warm-up match in Sandy Point.

Thereafter, he got two wickets against Zimbabwe and guided his team to a 115-run triumph in Diego Martin. Although he couldn’t get a wicket against Afghanistan, Khan was frugal as he conceded only 11 runs off the six overs he bowled.
