Since his arrival to the international scene, Sam Curran has been one of England’s brightest performers. The Surrey all-rounder made a great impact during the 2018 Test series at home against India and has become an integral part of the limited-overs set-up.

An intelligent left-arm swing bowler and a skillful lower-order left-hand batsman, Curran has now played 21 Tests, 8 ODIs and 15 T20Is and struck nearly 1,000 runs and taken above 50 wickets already at the international arena.

Son for former Zimbabwe cricketer Kevin Curran, the Curran junior has been a valiant performer with the bat and ball whenever his team has required. But on Thursday (June 24), Sam Curran didn’t just contribute with bat and ball to England’s cause, he also brought his football skills to the fore and made an impact.

Curran helped England dismiss Sri Lanka’s dangerous opening batsman Danushka Gunathilaka with a run-out off his boots. The incident happened in the second over of the 2nd T20I played in Cardiff, where Gunathilaka, who was at the non-striker’s end, tried to run across for a quick single.

Fellow opener Avishka Fernando tapped the ball near the pitch and got Gunathilaka to agree to his call. The duo anticipated Curran to take time going down in search of the ball, collect it and aim for the stumps. But the youngster gauged the ball quickly, rushed to it immediately and got it crashing onto the stumps with his right boot.

Recognising that the batsman is short of his ground, Curran and the rest of the English players went up in celebration as their team made a body blow to the opposition with some good game awareness and athleticism.

On a fruitful day, Curran also went on to dismiss Fernando during his two-over spell where he conceded just eight runs and played his part in restricting Sri Lanka to a paltry score of 111/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

He then contributed a useful cameo of 16 not out off 8 balls in sealing his team’s victory during the rain-interrupted chase, where DLS adjusted the target to 103 off 18 overs.

With two consecutive wins under their belt, England took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The third and final T20I will be played in Southampton on Saturday (June 26).
