WATCH: Shreyas Iyer smashes 90m no-look six off new KKR teammate

The scrutiny is on Shreyas Iyer and his T20 batting, but on Thursday he thwarted concerns around his sluggish batting with a fiery half-century, accelerating from 17 off 14 to finish on 57* off just 28 balls.

Capitalising on some loose bowling from the Lankan quicks, Iyer hit 40 runs in the last three overs including four fours and two sixes. One of those towering sixes garnered attention on social media – the middle-order batter hit a 90m no-look six off Chamika Karunaratne, his new teammate at Kolkata Knight Riders, in the 19th over of the innings.

With Iyer already in accelerating mode, Karunaratne dished out a slower leg cutter in the slot and Iyer smashed it over long-on in complete disdain. It set the tone for his heist in the last two overs. He was on 26 off 18 balls heading into the penultimate over and hit 31 runs in the next 10 balls.

The two players will play for KKR in the upcoming 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. While Iyer was bought for INR 12.5 crore and later announced as the captain, Karunaratne was a final round pick by KKR for INR 50 lakhs and will likely serve as Andre Russell’s backup.

In the T20I in Lucknow, India raced to 199 in their 20 overs, powered by Ishan Kishan’s 89 off 56 balls and opening stand of 111 with Rohit Sharma (44). Later, Iyer, who walked in  at No.3, continued the onslaught, making a fine fifty to stake his claim for a place in the XI in a full-strength India T20I side.
