Shubman Gill took a superb catch on Monday to dismiss Evin Lewis during the match between Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, that gave throwback memories to Kapil Dev’s running catching the 1983 World Cup final. After being put into bat first, the KL Rahul-led Super Giants found themselves in all sorts of trouble. Mohammed Shami removed Rahul with a peach of a delivery after which he accounted for Quinton de Kock’s wicket.

The onus was then on the hard-hitting Lewis to steady the ship for the Super Giants. The southpaw started his knock with two fours off fast bowler Varun Aaron. Lewis had earlier played in the Indian Premier League (IPL), having represented the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). In the second ball of the fourth over, Lewis collected a four through a thick outside-edge.

But in the very next delivery, the West Indies batter got out. Aaron dug in a short delivery and Lewis’ eyes lit up on seeing it. Lewis rocked back onto the backfoot and went for a pull shot over the deep mid-wicket boundary. However, he didn’t quite get enough timing for the ball to go over the ropes.

Gill had to run backwards to take the catch and he completed it with sheer precision. He made the catch look easier than it actually was. Gill kept his eyes on the ball, went backwards and his concentration never dipped.

In the end, he kept his balance and didn’t let the ball slip out of his hands. Lewis had to go after scoring 10 runs off nine balls with two fours. Aaron and the rest of the Titans’ players were ecstatic after Gill took the catch.

Gill made a name for himself while playing four seasons for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Back in 2018, he made his debut for the Men in Gold and Purple. After scoring his maiden fifty against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), he upped his game leaps and bounds.

But after a lacklustre campaign in 2021, the Knight Riders released. After earning INR 1.8 crores at KKR, the Titans roped him in at INR 8 crore. Gill, in the meantime, has played quite a few matches for Team India across formats.
