Few months after his retirement, it seems the cricketing world has found a new ‘AB de Villiers’ in South African U-19 star Dewald Brevis, who has impressed one and all with his talent and promise at the ICC U-19 World Cup 2022 in West Indies.

Brevis, the Proteas’ right-hand batter, seems an exact carbon copy of the great De Villiers, with a genuine resemblance in their playing style and look of their strokes at the crease.

The languid nature of De Villiers’ batting, the strong base and the unwavering commitment to playing in straight lines, no matter which side of the boundary he is aiming for, has been imbibed by the young Dewald Brevis.

Dewald Brevis invokes memories of watching ‘AB de Villiers’

For those who were mesmerised by De Villiers’ excellent batsmanship over the last decade and a half, watching Dewald Brevis operate against pace and spin is a throwback to the good old days. Brevis might be a little more of a bottom-handed batter than De Villiers. But the resemblance is unavoidable.

Dewald Brevis has dominated the batting charts for South Africa at the U-19 World Cup so far, making 265 runs from his three innings at an average of 88.33 and strike-rate of 80.06. The made solid half-centuries in his group encounters versus India and Ireland, either side of a commanding hundred against Uganda.

Born in Johannesburg in April 2003, the 18-year-old Brevis is very new to competitive cricket. The batter hasn’t yet played first-class or List A cricket but has featured in two senior domestic T20s.

Apart from his batting, Brevis is capable of contributing with his useful legbreaks. He has taken a wicket in the senior domestic game and has also bagged 14 scalps in his youth 50-over career for South Africa, conceding just 4.30 runs per over.
