After a long wait, India’s Unmukt Chand finally got the chance to make his Big Bash League (BBL) debut for Melbourne Renegades.

The elegant right-hand batter, who retired from Indian cricket last year, featured for the Renegades in their second-last league stage encounter of the BBL 2021-22 on Tuesday (January 18).

However, Unmukt’s BBL debut didn’t quite go according to plan as he was out dismissed for just 6 runs against the Hobart Hurricanes at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne.

The 28-year-old played a sweep shot, hoping to sneak a boundary through the on-side. But his top-edge flew straight into the hands of the deep mid-wicket fielder and his innings was cut short.

Ummukt Chand walked into bat at No.4 for Melbourne Renegades.

Unmukt Chand fails on BBL debut

The dismissal came off the fourth ball of the 18th over in Renegades’ run-chase. Facing Hurricanes’ wristspinner Sandeep Lamichhane, Unmukt Chand attempted a big shot to the leg-side boundary. But the batter was outdone by a googly from Lamichhane and could only top-edge the delivery to fielder Caleb Jewell.

Unmukt Chand would’ve been livid with himself not to have connected the ball properly. Walking in at No.4 with Renegades 132/2 chasing Hurricanes’ 182/5 with five overs remaining, the batter had the chance to be his team’s hero in his very first outing. But it wasn’t to be.

Instead, his dismissal triggered a badly timed collapse for the Renegades, who slipped from a position of strength to end with 176/6, falling bitterly close to a victory and further solidifying their unwanted eighth position in the BBL 2021-22 points table.

Unmukt Chand was one of Renegades’ popular overseas signings for the tournament but the club couldn’t quite fit the player into the line-up for as deep as their thirteenth league fixture.

The Indian batter, who had to wait a long, long time for his first outing, even took to Twitter recently to express his disappointment and frustration.

Unmukt has fond memories of playing in Australia. He played his breakthrough U-19 innings Down Under, scoring a famous hundred in the final of the 2012 junior World Cup against the hosts in Townsville.
