West Indies on Sunday (August 15) clinched a memorable victory over Pakistan in the first Test in Jamaica. The Calypso Kings managed to reach the goal post after a nervy chase in what was a low-scoring thriller at the Sabina Park.

Chasing the target of 168 in difficult batting conditions, the home team won by one just one wicket, with experienced quick Kemar Roach befittingly hitting the winning run.

Roach batted with great patience and defiance for his knock of unbeaten 30 from 52 balls and propelled the hosts to win off the fifth ball of the 57th over facing Pakistan quick Hasan Ali.

Kemar Roach turned out to be the saviour in a famous West Indies win in Jamaica.

West Indies keep Pakistan at bay in Jamaica; hosts go 1-0 up in series after memorable one-wicket win

The moment Roach drove Hasan’s full-pitched ball through covers, the West Indies dressing room erupted in celebration and applause for their lower-order saviour, who produced arguably the best batting effort of his career when the team needed it the most.

Famous commentator Ian Bishop was also in his element as he enriched another of West Indies’ popular wins with his great voice behind the mic.

Roach also delivered spells of 2/47 and 3/30 to help West Indies dismiss Pakistan for two modest scores of 217 and 203, having posted 253 of their own in the first half.

Young paceman Jayden Seales, who picked up eight wickets in the game, skipper Kraigg Brathwaite (97 in the first innings), Jason Holder (58 runs and 3/26 in the first innings) and Jermaine Blackwood (55 in the run-chase) were other big heroes of the West Indies win.

The victory will be a cause of great upliftment for Brathwaite and his men as they have begun the new cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) with an outstanding win.

West Indies are also now 1-0 ahead in the two-match series, with the next Test starting on Friday (August 20).
