West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite was left bitterly disappointed after a poor run out robbed him of what would’ve been a personally satisfying hundred in challenging circumstances in the first Test against Pakistan in Jamaica.

The run out took place in the 78th over on Day 2 where Brathwaite’s patient and defiant knock helped the home team inch ahead of visitors’ 217 in the first innings.

Having just surpassed Pakistan’s total after a painstaking effort in difficult batting conditions, the Calypso Kings would’ve been willing on their skipper to continue with his resilient innings and stretch their lead to a significant proportion.

Just then, however, they received a body blow as Brathwaite lost his wicket in the most disappointing fashion and missed out on his 10th Test century.

Kraigg Brathwaite had batted resolutely for his knock of 97 before the painful run out.

Kraigg Brathwaite left dejected after an untimely run out

Nudging Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah to the right of the fine-leg fielder Hasan Ali, Kraigg Brathwaite called his partner Joshua da Silva for a two. The first run was completed comfortably, but Brathwaite was found well short of the crease for the second as Hasan covered the ball quickly and produced a sharp throw that hit the base of the stumps.

The direct throw made all the difference, as Brathwaite wouldn’t have anticipated the fielder to hit the stumps with such great accuracy. Had the ball bounced and reached the wicketkeeper’s gloves, the batsman would have had at least a few milliseconds extra to reach his end back on time.

Even as the leg umpire sent the matter upstairs, the batsman knew that he is out and wore a dismayed look about him while he sat on the ground after collapsing in his dive.

Moment the dismissal was confirmed, fans expressed their anger and disappointment about Brathwaite missing out on a hundred with a run out while statsmen pointed out to a unique record that the batter now unfortunately has in his kitty.

West Indies eventually finished the day at 251/8, only 34 runs ahead of Pakistan with two wickets intact. The two-match Test series is part of the new cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC), spanning 2021 to 2023.
