After battling hard against South Africa, West Indies will take on Australia in another five-match T20I series, with the aim to overcome the disappointing 3-2 scoreline versus the Proteas and continue their preparations towards the T20 World Cup.

The Australians, too, will be hoping to test their resolve and depth against the defending world champions and fine-tune their squad before making a push to claim their maiden T20 World Cup title in the UAE.

With conditions and surfaces in the Caribbean nearly providing a similar challenge to the one expected in the Middle East, it’s a great opportunity for the tourists to assess their progress and plug holes before the marquee ICC event.

For West Indies as well, the series offers an opportunity to show progress on the middle-overs front after being found wanting in that phase of the innings against the South Africans. Better than others at muscling the ball out of the park, Caribbean batsmen need to improve their strike-rotation ability against spin bowling, an issue that Tabraiz Shamsi laid bare in Grenada.

West Indies will be hoping to overcome their disappointing series loss to South Africa

Australia missing big names for Caribbean sojourn; West Indies retain T20I core

The squads of both the sides offer an interesting outlook, with Australia missing some of their biggest names for the series but West Indies maintaining their strong core in T20Is. The tourists don’t have the services of David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins and Steve Smith for the tour. While Warner, Maxwell and Cummins have opted out due to excessive bubble fatigue amid COVID-19 pandemic, in Smith’s case, it is an injury that has held him back.

Talking to the press before the series, captain Aaron Finch had expressed his displeasure at not having few of his first-choice picks available. But the skipper also said it’ll be an opportunity for others to come in and strengthen their cases in the eyes of the selectors.

The situation is different for Kieron Pollard and company who, in a rare home summer, have their best personnel available to be picked. The likes of Chris Gayle, Andre Russell are around to take care of their batting unit and Dwayne Bravo is there to lead their bowling attack.

What they’ll hope, though, is for their best arsenal to produce greater consistency in terms of performances, something they lacked through the South African series.
