ICC U-19 World Cup 2022: Who is Yash Dhull?

Yash Dhull has been selected as the captain of the India U-19 side for the upcoming ICC Men’s U-19 World Cup in the Caribbean and also for the ongoing U-19 Asia Cup.

Having led Delhi at the U-16 and U-19 levels previously, Dhull is no stranger to leadership capacity, but the responsibility of succeeding some elite names in Indian cricket as the next U-19 national captain can be a burdening aspect. However, he had a stellar run in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy this season, scoring over 300 runs at an average of just over 75.

Last week, it was confirmed by BCCI that the Delhi-based batter will be leading the U-19 Indian side for the World Cup that begins next month in West Indies. In the U-19 Asia Cup that is currently ongoing, he got some good starts but has struggled to get a big score besides a half-century against UAE. However, there is very little concern among the management, who reckons he is saving it for the big tournament next month.

The young right-hander has a little bit of Hashim Amla in his batting style, especially the way he shuffles across from down the leg to covering his stumps while meeting the ball. It often gets difficult to perfect this technique as batters tend to lose the idea of their position in the crease when they make the shuffle, and not many in history have perfected that to the extent the South African legend did.

Yash Dhull looks likely to find success with the same technique as his head positioning and body balance are picture-perfect, making it look ridiculously easy on the eye. He can tonk the ball a long way whenever he wants to and doesn’t restrict himself to an anchor role.

“Family struggles and sacrifices brought Yash Dhull to this level,” says his father

ICC U-19 World Cup 2022: Who is Yash Dhull?

Yash Dhull hails from Delhi and led the state side at the U16 and U19 level.

Hailing from a middle-class family in Delhi, the right-handed batter had it no easy growing up and his family had to struggle a lot to ensure he had the perfect equipment necessary to play cricket at the highest level. His father gave up a job in a cosmetic company to find a more stable job, just to allow his ward to pursue his dream.

In an interview with Times Now, his father had mentioned that he kept giving him the best quality equipment and constantly kept upgrading them although they could marginally afford it, and they came at the expense of many family sacrifices. From there to have reached this stage, where the youngster is leading the Indian colts, is indeed a matter of honour and privilege.

Yash, on the other hand, also remains quite cautious with what he says and doesn’t give away a lot of information for the media to talk about. When he was asked about the players he looks up to, he diplomatically mentioned that anyone who is playing international cricket is good enough to learn from and everybody is a hero for him.

Perhaps that little aspect is a positive for his captaincy. He will be joining the list of Amit Pagnis, Mohammad Kaif, Parthiv Patel, Dinesh Karthik, Ravikant Shukla, Virat Kohli, Ashok Menaria, Unmukt Chand, Vijay Zol, Ishan Kishan, Prithvi Shaw and Priyam Garg – to join the list of U-19 Indian captains, and he will be desperate to join the elite company of Kaif, Kohli, Chand and Shaw – the captains to have won the title.

The team has had some impressive results, having entered the semifinals of the U-19 Asia Cup. They are firmly in contention to win that title and having won more World titles at this level than any other team, it would be an understatement to suggest that India will enter as favorites in the minds of fans, even if they aren’t aware of a single name in this contingent.

This is what Yash Dhull will be facing. The stardom for U19 captains has always arrived instantly and in some exceptional cases like Prithvi Shaw, it came well before. The moment this tournament begins, all eyes will be on this youngster and the many names in the tournament. It won’t be an easy thing to negotiate, but if he manages to do so, an IPL contract and unreal limelight will be at his doorstep.
