Zimbabwe will renew their longstanding rivalry with Bangladesh via a Test match outing at home in the month of July.

It will be the first time since 2013 that Zimbabwe will be hosting Bangladesh in a Test match. The hosts have clinched victories in five of their seven previous outings, including one defeat and one draw.

Overall, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe have played 17 Tests against each other and have enjoyed an equal share of wins (7-7) with three draws.

With time, the two cricket nations have taken a completely different route in terms of progress at the international stage, with Bangladesh becoming more competitive against top-ranked sides and Zimbabwe suffering a sad decline.

Zimbabwe selectors chose to retain the core of the squad that suffered a disappointing 2-0 sweep at the hands of Pakistan earlier in the year. The hosts led by Sean Williams have also brought back Tendai Chatara to their roster, besides making four uncapped inclusions in the form of Joylord Gumbie, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Chivanga Tanaka and Dion Myers.

For Bangladesh, the returns of Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah was the biggest news to have come out of their Test squad selection. Shakib, Bangladesh’s greatest all-round cricketer, has made a comeback after missing the Tests against Sri Lanka in April-May.

The selectors opted to give Mahmudullah the nod after more than a year’s gap in the Test side. The middle-order right-hand batsman has been brought back due to injury concerns that Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim have been carrying. The selectors didn’t want to take a chance and thus have kept Mahmudullah as a backup option on the batting front.
