ICC shares Super League table with 10 teams, forgets WTC champions New Zealand

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has shared the latest points table for the Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League on Friday, February 25. But they, surprisingly, forgot New Zealand, who are the reigning world champions of Test cricket. The Black Caps, led by Kane Williamson, are currently placed 12th in the points table with 30 points from three games and a net run rate of 2.352.

Back in March 2021, the Kiwis defeated Bangladesh 3-0 at home with victories in Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington. They were also scheduled to play three games against Pakistan in the latter’s backyard. But hours before the first game, New Zealand backed out of the tour, citing security concerns. The Black Caps are next scheduled to play ODI cricket in April when they’ll lock horns with the Netherlands.

The ICC also missed (or left the table with top 10) to mention Zimbabwe and the Netherlands in their latest points table. Zimbabwe have won three out of 12 games and have a net run rate of -0.894. The Dutch team is sitting at the bottom of the table with 25 points from seven games.

Bangladesh rises to the top

Bangladesh, on Friday, went to the top in the Super League points table after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead against Afghanistan in the three-match series. The team has won 10 out of 14 games and have a net run rate of 0.422. On February 25, the Tigers beat the Afghans, led by Hashmatullah Shahidi, by 88 runs at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

In the first ODI, Tamim Iqbal and Co. found themselves in all sorts of trouble after Fazal Farooqi picked up a four-wicket haul upfront. But then, Afif Hossain Dhrubo and Mehidy Hasan Miraz rescued them out of jail. Their unbeaten 174-run stand helped the home team get past the target with relative ease.

In the second game, Liton Das became the Player of the Match after he racked up 136 runs off 126 balls with 16 fours and two sixes. Mushfiqur Rahim also made 86 runs before he got out to Fareed Ahmad.

England are placed second in the Super League points table with nine points from 15 games. India, led by Rohit Sharma, are placed third in the table with a net run rate of 0.416. Ireland, Sri Lanka, Australia, Afghanistan and West Indies are next in the list.
