Based at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, the Southern Brave franchise boasts of a potent bowling line-up for the inaugural edition of The Hundred, starting July 22. Jofra Archer, Tymal Mills, Craig Overton are some of the popular figures part of the Brave’s bowling attack for the maiden 100-ball competition.

Southern Brave also possess a solid batting line-up and quality all-round cricketers, but it is their bowling line-up that is expected to hold greater importance for what looks set to be a very high-scoring competition played on some of the truest limited-overs surfaces in England.

With the 100-ball format making it necessary for batsmen to take on the aggressive route from almost ball one, the onus will be Brave’s bowlers to derail their progress and ensure their team is restricting the opposition to manageable totals or defending their targets successfully.

While the task of maintaining a tight leash on run-scoring will be tough for bowlers given the prevailing conditions in the UK, the Southern Brave are certainly capable of the same with a fine battery of pacemen, handy spin options and all-rounders to provide them support when needed.

George Garton is one of the quicks part of the Southern Brave squad

Southern Brave bowlers who could end as The Hundred’s top wicket-taker

1. Tymal Mills

Sussex left-arm pacer Tymal Mills may have not become the all-conquering force that everyone expected him to be when he first burst onto the scene, but he is certainly a handful at his best. Mills will be entering the inaugural edition of The Hundred for Southern Brave with a decent run of games in the T20 Blast this season where he has taken 11 wickets from his 7 innings at 7.63 runs per over.

A regular exponent of the slower ball variations, Mills can be a difficult bowler to line up for opposition batters. He has taken 142 wickets from 124 innings in his overall T20 career while conceding a respectable 7.83 runs per over.

2. George Garton

Another Sussex left-arm pacer part of the Southern Brave squad for The Hundred is 24-year-old George Garton. Garton has been on England selectors’ radar for some time and with good reason, as he has a decent white-ball record to his name domestically.

Garton has shown improved control and consistency this season via the T20 Blast where he has taken 6 wickets from his 5 outings while giving away only 6.62 runs per over. He will thus be entering the maiden 100-ball competition with a great sense of confidence behind him.

3. Danny Briggs

Warwickshire tweaker Danny Briggs could be the darkhorse among Southern Brave candidates to finish as The Hundred’s top wicket-taker. The left-arm spinner has been a cricketer rejuvenated in the ongoing domestic season, where he has taken 12 wickets from his 10 T20 Blast outings with an economy rate of 7.12. He was recently handed a much-awaited England limited-overs comeback.

Briggs is an experienced customer in domestic T20 cricket and has taken 209 wickets from 182 innings at an economy rate of 7.22. Southern Brave will be looking at him to provide them precision and wicket-taking nous through the middle-overs.
