‘There was no swing’ – Shane Warne makes farcical comment on Mitchell Starc’s first ball beauty
Left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc got the Ashes 2021-22 to a spectacular start, dismissing England opener Rory Burns off the very first ball at the Gabba on Wednesday (December 8).
Starc got Burns bowled around his legs as the left-hander tried to flick the ball through the on-side but missed it completely. There was a hint of swing on the ball and Burns, who had moved across to the off-side quite a lot, failed to cover it.
Mitchell Starc’s dismissal got the fans and the commentators excited about it. The exhilarating moment seems to have overwhelmed everyone present at the stadium and watching around the world. Well, all but one individual present at the Gabba that is.
Shane Warne unimpressed by Mitchell Starc’s first-ball Ashes dismissal
That individual, colour me surprise, was spin legend Shane Warne, who has had a history with Mitchell Starc. Warne wasn’t quite impressed by the delivery from the skiddy left-arm pacer and felt it was entirely Burns’ fault that he got out off a ball that most others would’ve clipped through the leg for a boundary.
In an exchange recorded from the live feed by the Fox Cricket, one could hear exactly what Warne felt about that delivery from Starc.
“Oh bowled him first ball,” wicketkeeping legend Adam Gilchrist said in his immediate reaction about the wicket. “The in-swinger from Starc and the immediate breakthrough. Australia can’t believe the start they have got away to. And it is all happening at The Gabba.”
But Shane Warne wasn’t so amused about it. “I tell you what that looked like a half-volley at leg stump but he missed,” he said. “He got too far across. It is a great start for the Aussies. You couldn’t wish for a better start.”
“That’s all okay, you are on your way Rory Burns. See ya later. The old half-volley at leg stump bowled him. “I don’t think there was any swing was there? There was no swing.”
But fellow commentator Mark Waugh disagreed with Warne there and countered him, saying: “It just swings back late” while the broadcasters played the replay of Burns’ dismissal.
Here is a clip of the dismissal:

Like Waugh, the hawkeye and ball tracker also countered Warne’s views about the delivery, with the technology confirming that the ball did deviate just enough in the air and came back in sharply.

Since Warne had, again, asked Australia to drop Starc from the Test side ahead of the Ashes opener, those watching the Test match felt he is just being biased against the bowler in his commentator and made their disagreement clear through the social media.
Here is how fans reacted to Warne’s commentary on Mitchell Starc’s ball:-
Shane Warne is so negative you’d think he was English. #Ashes

How petty is Shane Warne? Can’t even give Starc a half credit for a first ball dismissal. #Ashes2021

In the pre-series build-up, Warne had stressed that he feels Starc is “just not bowling well enough” to retain his spot in the Test side and the Australian selectors should consider young Jhye Richardson for the third seamer’s place alongside spearheads Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.
