There is absolutely no doubt that Glenn Maxwell is a game-changing player. Be it with the bat, ball or even in the field, the ‘Big Show’ often has the knack of producing moments of brilliance that will leave the world awestruck.

There was one such moment in match number 51 of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2021-22 between Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heat at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Maxwell took an absolute blinder running back from mid-on and taking a one-handed stunner. It was the 16th over of the innings and Brisbane Heat had just taken the power surge. Nathan Coulter-Nile was the bowler and he had conceded just four runs in as many balls in that over.

On the fifth ball, Sam Heazlett tried to back away and heave one over mid-on. The left-hander mistimed it and got it off the bottom of the bat. It seemed like he had got enough to get it over mid-on but Maxwell sprinted back from the edge of the 30-yard circle, leapt and stretched out his left hand to complete a stunning catch. Both of Maxwell’s feet were in the air when he took the catch and dived backwards.

And this was after Maxwell had already impacted the game with two crucial wickets. Brisbane Heat had won the toss and opted to bat first. Chris Lynn and Nathan McSweeney gave Brisbane Heat a solid start as they added 48 runs in the powerplay. But Melbourne Stars captain Maxwell brought himself on as soon as the powerplay ended and got rid of the dangerous Lynn for 28. He continued bowling economically before picking up the wicket of Lachlan Pfeffer in his final over.

The off-spinning all-rounder and Melbourne Stars skipper returned with figures of 2/19 from his quota of four overs. Maxwell then opened the batting and scored a fluent 37. He shared a fantastic 104-run stand with Joe Clarke to put Melbourne Stars on course for a comfortable victory.

While Maxwell made contributions with both bat and ball but the highlight of the day was the catch that he took running back from mid-on. It is arguably one of the best catches of this season.
