Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah and England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler were involved in a heated exchange on Day 5 of the Lord’s Test this Monday (August 16). The spat was related to a backstory of an incident from Day 3 when Bumrah had given England tailender James Anderson a proper barrage of bouncers with the ball.

As Bumrah arrived at the crease in India’s second-innings with the aim to try and help his team extend their lead and take the game away from the hosts, he received a mouthful from close-in fieldsmen, including Buttler.

The verbal altercation was on display just before the start of the 93rd over where, just as England fielders went across for the change of ends, Buttler was seen and heard saying something to Jasprit Bumrah before the batter also responded back.

“Tempers flying”, as Jos Buttler and Jasprit Bumrah indulge in a heated exchange

Taking note, Indian skipper Virat Kohli was seen fired up at the Lord’s balcony, especially when an attempted short ball from pacer Mark Wood was somehow edged away for a four through the off-side from Bumrah.

“Tempers flying”, noted commentator Sanjay Manjrekar on air, as broadcasters showed footage of Bumrah and his batting partner Mohammed Shami having a discussion in-between overs and one of the on-field umpires having a chat with him.

In the clip shared of the passage over social media, one can see umpire Richard Illingworth talking to Jasprit Bumrah and trying to understand what the issue is. Bumrah presumably told Illingworth about the words thrown at him by Buttler, Wood and other England fieldsmen before going back to the batting crease.

Fans watching were once again given replay footage of Jasprit Bumrah and Jos Buttler conversing, while England captain Joe Root and Illingworth’s on-field partner Michael Gough looked on.

The matter did not escalate any further. Or one can say it had escalated already because of how England felt about Bumrah targetting their No.11 James Anderson with some sharp and mean bouncers late on Saturday (August 14).

Interestingly, while it was expected that Anderson will give it back to Bumrah in the same manner, he did not come on to bowl at him for a while, even as the batter got going and started adding crucial runs to India’s lead.
