New Zealand cricketer Maddy Green entered the race to bag the catch of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 on Sunday (March 13) with a stunning grab near the ropes in the league stage encounter against Australia.

Green made a full-stretched dive with both her hands and feet in the air to secure an absolute beauty of a catch that those following the tournament closely will never forget.

The dismissal involved Australia’s rampaging in-form allrounder Ellyse Perry, who smashed New Zealand seamer Lea Tahuhu towards the long-on boundary. But what seemed like a straightforward six was turned into a wicket by one piece of magic from Maddy Green.

Maddy Green took one of the best catches of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022.

The catch was seen in its full glory on the final ball of the 45th over in the Australian innings. Intent on maximising the final phase of their innings, the Australians went hell for leather and started playing their big shots. One of these saw Perry dispatch an attempted yorker from Tahuhu to the long-on region.

Given how straight she had hit the ball, it was expected Perry would get a four or a six off the delivery. But a super athletic Maddy Green covered her ground from the wide long-on region and took an outstanding catch that would go down as one of this World Cup’s finest grabs.

Not just the thrill and the aesthetics, but also the impact of Green’s catch was quite eye-catching, as Perry’s departure helped New Zealand tap the run-scoring a lot better and hold the Aussies back a bit. At one stage, they looked like getting a score in excess of 280 but eventually finished with 269/8 off their 50 overs.

Disappointingly for them, however, the White Ferns collapsed on the batting front and made only 128 runs in response in their second defeat as the tournament hosts in four matches.
