There’s no doubting how freakish Rishabh Pant is, but if you needed first-hand evidence of the same, it came on Saturday in a tense situation in the big T20 World Cup clash against Pakistan.

Shaheen Shah Afridi had made India’s innings a mess with two early wickets – that of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul in his first three overs. Despite glimpses of Vintage Virat Kohli with a six down the ground, the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav shortly after by Hasan Ali had firmly tilted the contest Pakistan’s way.

Out of that mess came Pant, composed, showing more calm and composure and maintaining his reputation from the Delhi Capitals where his slow-go approach had become a topic of debate.

At 20 off 20 balls, Pant and Kohli had rescued India from a precarious position and the dup went on to slightly up the ante. Pant was the first to take charge, going from 23 off 24 balls to hit Hasan Ali for two back-to-back one-handed sixes. Wait, what? Yes, that’s right.

The first a flick over mid-wicket sailed for 80m into the stands as he lost grip on his bat and hit a stellar six, but he wasn’t done just yet. Off the next ball, Pant released one hand on the bat again as he sent one towering down the ground for another maximum.

However, he could not quite carry on from there as he tried a big swipe off Shadab Khan shortly after only to gift a return catch to him.
